Finance lease is a popular funding method for those VAT registered companies who want to handle the administration of their vehicles themselves.
The hirer can choose to pay the entire cost of the vehicle over the agreed lease period, or pay lower monthly rentals during the lease period with a final payment based on an anticipated resale value of the vehicle. Finance Lease is especially tax efficient if you are financing Commercial Vehicles, as the rentals are 100% allowed for tax relief.
Watch out, the final payment / balloon / residual / bubble is not optional, you are responsible for paying it and it may be more than the value of the vehicle at that time! Therefore ensure that any quotations you may compare reflect similar final payments.
Lease purchase is used by those companies that want eventual ownership of the vehicle. It is similar to hire purchase and offers tax advantages on high value cars, and benefits to those organisations unable to recover VAT. This is a funding deal where the company takes ownership of the vehicle when all the payments have been made which also includes car leasing and van leasing.
Part of the capital cost of vehicle leasing may be deferred into a final payment the final payment is the value of the vehicle at the end of the agreed finance period.
The final payment or residual is not optional, it must be paid and ironically may be more than the actual valuation of the vehicle. Therefore, always ensure that any quotations you receive will reflect these final payments.
